Quick question: How bad is an unredeemed "W"? I understand that one "W" on your transcript won't kill you, but that assertion has always been followed by the qualifier "...if you retake the course and get an A."

I really, really don't want to retake this course. It requires a great deal of pre-requisite knowledge and it's been a solid 2 years since I took the pre-requisites. If I re-took my "W," I'd have to spend a great deal of the winter relearning the pre-requisite material and honestly, I'd rather devote my time to the MCAT. The course was a lower level math course that is not required for my major or medical school. I have >3.95 GPA (All A's in all of my classes, except for one B). Can I just leave the W as it is? It is the only one I have.

I've heard a W won't kill you, and I think the reason the statement is usually qualified is because it's a class that is necessary. It would be easy to explain that there wasn't really any reason for you to complete the class.

Awesome GPA!

What is it? I am just curious. I am dealing with the same situation in biochem.

I W'ed out of a Religion class. I absolutely hated the viewpoint of my teacher. Most work was essay and he was a pretty biased grader. I dropped after 3 weeks. I wouldn't re-take it again however.

Sorry for the incredibly late reply! It's been a busy couple of weeks. In response to your questions...

1). The dropped class was Calc 2. I wasn't doing too poorly in the class when I dropped, but I'd gotten a couple of bouts of what I think was the flu and fell behind in studying. I felt I didn't know the pre-req material from the first two units of the class well enough to keep going without a struggle. I figured I retake it, not get sick, and shine. But since it isn't required for my major or more than 3 medical schools, it lost priority to classes like Orgo, Physics, etc. Now, if I retake it, I need to re-learn Calc I.

2). I received A's in Calc I, Biostatistics, Physics 1, and Physics 2.

Given this, do you have a refined view of my situation. Should I retake? Agian, except for 1 B and this W, I am a straight A student. I just got inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.
