it looks like i will have to retake a class or two in the summer. i am ms1. that also means research is out the window. say if a i pass and maybe get a high pass until clinicals how will that effect my residency application.
also, does anyone know anything about international medicine and americans practicing?

First yr is just about surviving. What you are doing now will have almost no impact on your future (unless you're wanting Derm). Here's my opinion on importance of 1st yr

1st yr<<2nd yr<<<<<step 1<3rd yr

A few yrs down the road, nobody is going to care that you repeated or remediated. Your future patients certainly aren't going to ask.

I agree with Thackl. It doesn't really matter, unless you're looking to go into one of the most highly competitive fields. (Even then, it's probably not an insurmountable obstacle). People understand that the first year of med school is rough and that students sometimes have trouble adjusting to the workload, etc. Just make sure you do fine from here on out and you'll be fine. I really doubt any residency director is going to care if you had to remediate a class or two after your first year. As far as the research goes, don't sweat it. There's plenty more opportunities to do research down the road--during second year, as an elective during third year, etc. Doing it between 1st and 2nd years isn't critical. Good luck with everything!

The absolute last thing any residency director cares about is pre-clinical grades. They simply don't matter. With that in mind, redoing some work over the summer is no big deal except insofar far as it means you won't be able to do research.

But keep in mind that the material doesn't get any easier. So if you are struggling to get through first year material, NOW is the time to right the ship by addressing study habits, etc -- you will be overwhelmed next year if you don't.

Does it show up on your transcript that you failed or do you just get the second grade posted?

While the above posters do have a point, also bear in mind that if you failed a class:

a) You probably didn't learn what you were supposed to
b) The professor was a real jackass
c) Something really unfortunate happened to you

the new grade is posted but on the deans letter it says had to retake the course. also, i think i left out that i would retake the final which is a miniboard in the summer, not the whole course. i would have five weeks to study for it.
would i be able to do some clinical research in this time, or not enough time given the studying i would have to do. how many hours a day for six weeks do you need to do research summer of ms1
