I understand the earlier the better and that what's done is done, but can you give me an idea of how significant submitting your secondaries around that time is to an applicants competitiveness?

It depends on too many different factors...

I don't know what kind of answer you are really expecting, but noones gonna be able to provide you a definite answer.

It depends on the school for two reasons:

1) Some schools are rolling, others are non-rolling admissions. For non-rolling admissions, it's better to get the secondary in earlier because interview slots are being filled up, but it's less critical for the ultimate admissions decision.

2) Schools send out their secondaries at very different times. Some schools haven't even sent out their secondary, so obviously, if they released it tomorrow, submitting by the 20th would mean you're right on time. On the other hand, if you received the secondary in early July, you're a little bit behind by now (esp if it's a school with an aggressive rolling policy, where they usually expect a quick turnaround time).

Assuming you're complete around 8/20 I wouldn't consider that late at all. I think you start to get in trouble as you go into September and October. It's really all arbitrary, though.

(sent from my phone)

What is considered 'late' for September? If August 20th is considered not that late, then at what point is a September completion detrimental?

I ask because my committee letter is holding things up until September most likely. Everyone on SDN says not to worry about it, but I understandably have a hard time relaxing as I see interviews being sent all over the place.

Not late at all =/ not that late

And didn't he just say it was arbitrary? If everyone on SDN keeps telling you not to worry about it, then why do you keep asking? Are you going to suddenly withdraw your app and apply next cycle if someone tells you that you're late? If not, then don't worry about it if you can't change it.

Because I have an easier time believing his opinion than that of the people I need to compete against for interview spots.

I have been in since July and I'm just receiving secondaries for several schools now.

With that in mind, it's too variable from school to school. Just get them in as early as you can, it is all you can control anyways.

There's nothing you can do about it, so stressing yourself out is absolutely useless. My suggestion would be to get off SDN or stop looking at the school-specific threads.

You're just ahead of the curve for that. If you submitted a few weeks after the 20th, that might start causing problems.
