DO MS1 here, really interested in psychiatry and would love to do some research over the summer to get more exposed to the field and maybe network a bit.

Any clue the best way to get involved? Who should I be emailing/calling? Any other tips to get involved in the field?

Much appreciated.

Why don't you approach some of the psychiatry faculty who gave you your psychiatry lecture in the first year? They would probably have a good idea of who in your school's psychiatry department is willing to mentor medical students in research. Other than this, you are left with cold calling people at universities near where ever you will be next summer. Look at the web sites, most have some description of their research. Happy hunting.

Sadly we haven't had a psych lecture yet...nor any permanent psych faculty on staff or a full psych department.

In your opinion, when I go to call/email, should I only contact people at universities who I am able to find on PubMed? Or couldn contacting a variety of professors n the psych deparment be useful?

Tell us where you are and perhaps we can be of more help, or at least which city or state region.

I'm in SF bay area, but could spend the summer in any of the big CA cities. Could also do research in DC, NY, Boston...I'm pretty unrestricted in terms of where I can go this summer.

When I was a medical student, I would just go to the faculty website, and track down their email addresses.

I would then just email the attendings straight up, state my interest in psychiatry and in wanting to help out with research, and attach my CV.

So maybe email some attendings at UCSF/Stanford? You're lucky to be in the Bay Area, lots of choices.

You will be surprised by the number of responses you will get...
