Hi,

I am about to start an undergraduate degree and I’d appreciate any advice on the extracurricular activities I need to add in order to improve my application.

1-I’m a massage therapist/acupuncturist and in addition to my clinical experience in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation center, I have several years of teaching experience at a massage therapy school.

2-I have 300 hours of hospital volunteering experience.

3-I have practiced Chinese martial arts (I am not Chinese) and Muay Thai for more than 10 years.

4-I am fluent in 4 different languages and have previously worked as a translator.

In your opinion, how competitive is my current list of activities? How can I improve it?

The four different languages EC is very impressive. If I were you I would focus on school and getting good grades (considering you just began undergraduate). Get some shadowing and more volunteer experience in there, both clinical and non-clinical.

I think your clinical experience looks fine. But I see no US physician shadowing. And you're missing non-medical community service that helps those in need (unless you were an unpaid translator, volunteering to assist those with poor economic resources). Leadership and teaching experiences are not required, but either makes an application stronger. You might also consider a research activity.

Keep in mind that when you apply, you'll need to provide dates and total hours, and a Contact who can attest to them.

Thanks for your replies. I am a Buddhist and I have volunteered at my temple. However, I am not so sure if should mention a religious activity.

It depends on your role. Teaching and leadership activities are worth mentioning. Outreach activities that help the community are also (like feeding the hungry, eg).
