how can you defer?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just to accepted to one of my top choices (Western 🙂 ), and I wanted to know how easy it is to defer at a school. I don't have a really strong reason...basically, I just want to get a job (as a waiter or something) and make some money. My financial situation isn't "bad" (no college loans) but I would like to 1) just take some time off, chill out & 2) make money. Would the schools go for it? Anyone with experience?
Thanks!
I know they don't take deferment lightly. You have to have a really good reason. I don't think your reason would qualify. Many people (myself included) go into med school in far worse financial straits than than you are in. If I were an AdCom, my first question about the time off would be "If you wanted to take time off before med school, why did you apply now?"

Sorry to be so harsh, but I don't think you'll get much understanding from the AdComs. I could be wrong.

Western was pretty nice about deferral. Be aware that some schools don't even consider it. Just be honest and nice to them, and they might go for it.

I think it depends on the school. I have a brother-in-law that took a year off to travel before starting med school (MD, not sure about DO). The school said that they couldn't guarantee a spot but it worked out and ended up being okay and starting the following year.
