How common are research years becoming for comp specialties

use derm/nsgy/ent or whatever as an example up to you.

my sense from talking to med students is that things are shifting for comp specialties to where students need to really know by semester 2 or so ms1 where they want to be if they want a comp specialty. is it becoming like md admissions where a gap year (research year) is basically becoming soft-required?

Just being honest, at my T20 school everyone I know who applied to derm/ENT/NSGY in the last 3 years had taken a research year, have advanced degree (MS, MPH, PhD) or was insanely productive with research during or prior to med school. (Think 30+ pubs)

it seems from the spreadsheets that advanced degrees are highly coveted
