How competitive are the SoCal programs?

I'm an MS3 planning on applying to anesthesia, and would like to stay in SoCal if possible. My step 1 was 225. I know what the national average numbers are, but does anyone know what the numbers are like for programs like UCLA, UCI, UCSD, USC, Loma Linda? I know CA programs can be more competitive...

Honestly, it's about much more than just numbers. I scored a few points less than you and I have gotten interviews at UCLA, UCLA-Harbor, USC, and Loma Linda. UCI hasn't sent out any invites that I know of yet. I think programs are really looking for a complete applicant (Strong LOR's, CV, Transcript, PS, medical school). I was really surprised to get an interview at some of the So-Cal programs, but I guess it really goes beyond your scores. I also recommend if there's a particular program you want to be at do an away rotation there and kick butt. I can probably give you better advice if I actually end up matching in So-Cal since it's where I want to be. If you need any other info. feel free to PM me

Does anyone know if Cedars-Sinai has sent out interview invites yet? Any information on that program as related to the application process this year?

I spoke to the res coordinator earlier this summer and besides from sounding completely clueless about the process, she seemed to suggest that there were actually no open positions. She said that they were transitioning from the Drew program and that the likelihood of their being availability for CA1 or PGY1 (she wasn't clear on the distinction) was small. I was really excited about the possibility of a cedars program, but after talking to them I was a bit turned off. They don't rotate anywhere except for children's and it sounds like it will be in disarray at least for the next few cycles. oh well.

USC apparent has a very very poor program. Ive heard that from 2 different program directors, from Boston University and Univ of Miami.

I talked to her too. Cedars has had Drew residents for some time, although the official independent residency program just started this year. they offer 4 spots. They brag about the individualized attention each resident gets, and overall, Cedars is a good hospital. I hope this helps. I didn't apply...wasn't too convinced just because things seem too new.
