Hi,

I was curious if anybody could give me some insight into NYC and Boston programs? How competitive are they? I have a mid-240 Step 1, all honors in clinical rotations, P/F first year, top 5 med school, and will be doing some Derm research. One abstract in Rad Onc. Decent volunteer experience, and serving on an exec board at my school.

Any insight? Thank you!

You are prob in a decent position given the above info. I would suggest doing at least 1 away rotation at a NY school and hoping for the best.

p.s. I'm not in NY

It's Derm, it's a city in the Northeast, so NYC is very competitive, can't speak for Boston, but assume similar. In my experience, it's not quite as much people that want to move to NYC, but people who are already in the area for med school and want to stay here for residency.

Your AOA status?

Keep going with the Derm research. It's pretty much not just something to bolster your app anymore, but more of a 'box that's supposed to be checked off' sort of thing.

IMHO, as a quick general summary (not necessarily applying to OP specifically), the baseline Derm applicant:
~240 - 260 step I
Top 25 med school
Several derm projects/pubs
AOA
Honors in most clinical rotations
Various other volunteer work, projects, etc
Great LORs

Figure out what sets you apart from that crowd. For instance, the whole 'who you know' thing.
