I am considering applying early admission to texas tech university but I noticed that they accepted only 4 out of state students last year and offer preferential enrollment to Texas residents.

This seems to be true for all Texas schools.

I was just wondering if anyone has insights on this issue.

My GPA is 3.4, PCAT 99, 6 months of pharm tech experience, ~100 hours volunteer hours at hospital.

If anyone can recommend me a decent school with low OOS tuition that would also be greatly appreciated. Their ~25,000 OOS tuition with all fees are very attractive and it is a good school too. I don't want to go to a terrible school since pharmacy job market is much more competitive.

Also, if anyone has any information on texas tech and university of texas in general, it would be greatly appreciated from current students that attend either school as those two are my top choices.

I applied to TTU and UT as an out-of-state student. My PharmCAS GPA was terrible (2.70), but my PCAT was high (98th %ile). My last 40 units (all prereqs) when I applied were a 4.0, so my GPA as calculated by Tech was very high. I ended up getting into TTU, though I chose to attend Maryland. UT rejected my app mere days after submitting it.

Why did you choose Maryland? Just curious. Did you just like the city/atmosphere better? Or was there something about Tech you didn't like when you visited there? Thanks

It was less expensive. I was able to get in-state tuition in MD after my first year. Also, I liked the dual-degree opportunities at Maryland. I'm currently pursuing a PharmD/MS, and it doesn't cost extra or require additional time. I was a big fan of the research at the school. Lastly, I liked the fact that there is so much accessibility to FDA, NIH, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and various pharmaceutical companies. The proximity to DC is pretty nice too. 🙂

I'm still happy with my decision.

Current Tech student. I would suggest you apply, Early Admission if you're sure you want to go to Tech. You can choose Abilene for all 4 years, Amarillo for 4 years, or Amarillo for 2 years and Lubbock or Dallas for your last 2 years. Tech has good relationships with the local hospitals and our students never have trouble getting enough rotation hours. We actually do 2,250 as part of our curriculum instead of the minimum of 1,500 that most schools do.

Thanks guys. Maryland does sound like a perfect school for you haha. How did you get instate tuition after 1 year? I guess its a school specific thing?

Yea, I am thinking about applying to tech early decision but just not sure if I even have a good chance. Sarian had a very high gpa and 98% pcat haha. My GPA might go up to like 3.5 or 3.6 with their gpa system. I saw their stats last year with only 4 OOS students accepted.
I want to go to clinical and I heard tech does a good job preparing students for it. You seem to confirm what other people were telling me.

Hey I applied to both schools during this past cycle and received admission into both. I live in state but UT doesn't have a preference whether you're in or out of state. Let me know if you have any questions 🙂

Haha that is awesome. Congrats. I am guessing you chose UT?

I know UT is a very good school but I don't think I have good enough stats for that school haha. I am probably going to just apply to tech early decision and if I get deferred, I will apply to UT just for kicks lol.

Just curious, what were your stats? And what made you choose that particular school over the other? Thanks

Thank you and yes I did! UT and Tech are both awesome. Tech has some of the coolest ways of learning I've ever seen. They have fake dummies that lay in hospital beds and can talk, cry, have seizures, etc. which just shows you how hands-on and creative they are with their teaching. Don't ever think that you're not competitive enough for any school. I made an 89 on the PCAT but my overall GPA on Pharmcas was a 3.0 and less than that for my average science GPA. It will really help if you have a good PCAT score though. Apart from your stats, they really want to see your passion for pharmacy. The essay is really a place for you to shine and be memorable. Pull anything about yourself and your experiences that make you unique and show them that you know a lot about the career (choose specific things to talk about that the average person would not know).

I chose UT because of its rank, location, professors, and most importantly how I felt when I went for the interview. Each school has its own vibe and feel to it and I really felt like I would fit in and I genuinely connected with every pharmacy student that I spoke with. Tech was also great. I had my interview in Abilene and their staff is phenomenal. They are so sweet and kind and they really seem like they care very much for their students.

Hope this helped! Feel free to ask more questions 🙂

Thanks eliafua for the confidence boost and especially your advice on the essay!

I will definitely try to incorporate that part.
