How did the eukaryotic chromosome structure evolve? It's obvious that the process of meiosis is beneficial to fitness as it increases the combinations of genetic material/alleles etc. via crossing over random assortment etc. However, the prokaryotic chromosome seems so structurally distinct from the eukaryotic one? Any theories on how this occurred? Examples of organisms with structural intermediates?

Is this for a class or for MCAT? I'm pretty sure you don't need to know this for MCAT. Know the diffs between eukaryotic and prokaryotic genomes, basic chromosome structure/organization for eukaryotes (nucleosomes, chromatin, etc.), meiosis stuff, etc. I'm pretty sure the only theory on structure evolution you need to know is the endosymbiotic theory for mitochondria.
