Hello to everyone
i have a question,as you recently appeared for NBDE,what did you find helpful materials for preparation,
i mean is dental decks, pastyear papers and kaplan notes enough for preparation or you people get through text books also or any other recommendation.
please advice me as i am going to appear in Dec 2003
one more thing i have heard a rumour or is it true that from summer of 2004 exam format will be changed i mean it will be more problem based any opinion about that also would be appreciated
thanks in advance for helping

don't waste your time with kaplan. go straight to dental decks and released examinations.

I used a whole bunch of material, which at the end weren't that helpful. I regret spending my money on kaplan book. but, if you can get a hold on copies of kaplan examinations, it's even better.

kaplan exams are short tests (30 questions), which in the back have the answer key and they explain to you the reason why each answer is correct. Kind of like dental decks. They are really helpful.

If knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have bother with kaplan and other review books and textbooks.

If you learn your dental decks (the newest edition as possible) really good and then review the past examinations to learn how to take the test (which is the single most useful tip ever) that's enough for doing good on the test.

Read the decks at least 3 times and review exams several times, if you payed attention during dental school classes, that should be enough.

Remember, the most important thing, is get the method of examination. learn the tricks of the test.

about the NDBE part 1 format change, there was a thread going on on the Dental forum about that, you may want to read that.

hope this helps.

Thanks a lot Meggs for your detailed answer.
i have another question i am out of touch with my books since last 6 years would you or anybody advice me how i'll start,
would kaplan helpful for revising or i have to open up my text books and notes,I am quite clear about basics of all subjects except biochemistry which seems tough though.
what is anybody's advice about cases like me
thanks in advance

hi sadaf
the best things to read for your nbde part 1 is dental decks and the asda papers.but if you are out of touch with your books for a couple of years then you should go though the kaplan notes as that was my case too...i was out of touch for 4 years....don't waste time in reading other books.if you have the time and want to refresh your basics then read the kaplan notes and do the dental decks and the asda papers thoroughly.

Thanks shashi,

hey! ive been reading these never debates about which is better--decks alone or kaplan alone or decks + kaplan....but after my experience with the part 1 recently (which went well) is that this is a competitive entrance kinda exam, and theres no hard and fast rule that one particular book would cover everything!! whoever has taken the All-India entrance exams in India would surely agree with me! as thats one of the toughest in the world, assessing the nature of the competition!! however the decks provide a good foundation to reply upon wherein one can be assured of leaping across the 75 mark.....from thereon..every point yu gain, is due to the extra knowledge yu have attained from either the old papers, kaplan, text books etc....so i think what the the juniors need to do, is to first get comfy with the decks and then supplement it with as much material as you can..as one cant be lazy in attaining knowledge and there arent any short cuts! well, this is my personal piece of advice, and am confident this would have worked for me, when my scores are out

hey guys
i have taken my exams in july along with most of u on this thread.i see some familiar names too!!!i think anat was really easy and since its percantile, all of us would end up with more or less the same scores.da and bio were bad and to those who answered well in those, are bound to get a high score relatively.
we would just have to wait and see.as far as the material needed goes,i feel that the decks and papers are necessary to get 75 to 80%but its that extra knowledge we have, helps us get a higher score comparitively.i suggest anyone preparing for december to go thru kaplan too.it helps u where others cant do.we may be reading a lot of it but believe me nothing goes for a waste.
i think we need to go thru the decks 6 times and the papers 6 times.kaplan twice.this will defly fetch u a lot without doubt.
this is what i realised after i took the exams.anyway everyone is entitled to his opinion.the person who takes the exam has no choice but to read everything as these posts are just for inspiration and believe me it helps!!!
