I realize this forum is mostly for students but I know there are some doctors also. So I am wondering, what did you do to find the job you have now, or the perfect job?
A thesis was done here saying that its a great idea to start marketing yourself before graduation. Of course academics and other things take away time so its hard to set time away for that. And then spending time to advertise in ineffective venues are a waste also. It has been said that a lot of practices where the doctors are quite old before they sell the practice have a dying practice and cost the doctor money. (Maybe there is a connection the idea that it is old doctors refusing to sell pratices and falling behind in technology thats killing the practice rather than too many graduates.) There was an article in Review of Optometry recently about buying into a practice but you need to know a lot about practice before you buy into it. Then we discussed eye care at Walmart (ie. Binyons, lenscrafters, etc. ) It seems the best job available is to start cold turkey, but then you are going solo rather than joining an established group which would be more secure. Alright guys, what can you say from experience? No more theoretical or salesman crap.

Win the lottery.....open a practice cold...work three days a week....Golf the other four.....life is good.

A few classmates of mine trialed potential employers for their externship sites. However, if looking for employment opportunities, there are usually listings in the state optometric association newsletters or you could look through the OCC listings on the AOA website for various states.

Most listings on the web are for commercial practices.

It really depends on what your "dream job" is.

It really depends on what your "dream job" is.

But see thats a part of the problem. I've been told that statistically optometrists stay with their first job for a grand total of 6 months on average before they decide they don't like the job. My dream job would be to join a practice that is with 1 or 2 other doctors that I really am good friends with. I would like to practice full scope optometry and make an income that supports me and also supports my family. My wife is from Europe so we should visit her folks at least every 2 years or sooner. The most important part to me is to have a job I'm proud of and help the patient the best I can with what I know. Being a new graduate I'm not likely to find that immediately. I can look at some of those availability websites (our school has one in fact) but I doubt I'll find much there. Well I have 2 years to go anyway butI just wondered if there were any secrets you guys used.
