I'm trying to apply through ScribeAmerica but their application requires me to select a 12 hour shift every weekday....And honestly, I only wanted to work full shifts on the weekends. Do they honestly expect full availability? Is there another company that I could look into?

At least at my location, even though I had to put a weekly availability of a 12 hour shift, I mostly work once a week on weekend. While I do occasionally work 12 hours on weekends, it’s pretty rare

Many locations don’t require that. At mine, we aren’t even required to put that kind of availability and it’s just when you can. We have an 8, 10, and 12 hr shift. Part time is 1-2 shifts a week and full time is 3-4. And that’s only for the ER, the outpatient ones are much different. If you’re just in the application phase, you should be fine!

Scribe companies are fine, but you can actually look on Indeed and find outpatient/clinic scribe positions that aren't through a company. These positions typically pay 1.5-2x more in my experience. Companies like ScribeAmerica know they can take advantage of naive pre-meds and they frequently do!

I worked as a scribe for a few months, but then I found a job working as an ophthalmic assistant (with no previous experience besides the scribing) and making almost $20 an hour in a much more relaxed environment. There are scribes that work here for the physicians and make similar to what I make.

Would also recommend looking outside of scribe companies. I have multiple friends who have done Scribe America. Anecdotal, but they were "trained" by grossly incompetent employees, asked to work ridiculous hours, and were then paid minimum wage. On the opposite end, I have a friend that scribes for a private practice, makes $25/hr, and has a great work environment. Worth expanding your search.

Unfortunately I never see anything on indeed or other similar sites. There are too many pre-meds at my school I suppose; these are hard to come by.

Same with me. ScribeAmerica isn’t all bad, even though they aren’t the greatest. I get to see quite a bit at a Level 1 ER and once you’ve been there about a year, you can become a trainer with higher pay when you’re training plus there’s merit based pay raises.

Scribeamerica as a company blows, as does the pay but it gives you a unique opportunity to form really close relationships with docs, like to the point of genuinely calling some of them friends and gives you a glimpse into what your future holds which is honestly more valuable than any monetary gain from a gap year job .Doesn’t matter if you can’t meet their weekly hour “requirement” , as long as you’re a warm body who can type moderately quickly and aren’t going to piss off the providers they’ll hire you for whatever hrs you’re willing to work

I'm just not sure how to get past the availability section of the application. If I select one 12 hour shift for each day (Mon-Sun), am I not stuck with that availability if I get the job? The application forces me to select a shift for M-F though I only want to work on the weekends....How do you get around this?

Once hired you’ll get to choose full time or part time and from there you just set your availability. I was able to work 50 hour weeks when I had nothing to do and 8-12 hour weeks when I was swamped with my other job. At least in my experience they’re pretty flexible as it’s usually another premed undergrad or someone in their gap year who is doing the scheduling

When I applied, they did not require me to do this! However, I would recommend applying outside of companies like ScribeAmerica if possible. There weren't many options for me in my area so I had no other choice. The job has its ups and downs like any other jobs but the management and the pay sucks really bad, at least for me. The experience makes up for it but if you are able to find a better paying job with better hours, go for it!
