Hi, I am planning on beginning my pharmacy pre reqs in january at a state college near my house. I have no idea how to schedule classes! Im not sure in which order anything should be taken. I was wondering in what sequence
everyone took their classes. Also, if there is anything you would change about how you scheduled your classes

ie: year 1 semester 1: semester 2: summer:

Thank you!

You should check with your school, which may have a counselor that can guide you through this. But basically, general chemistry, general biology, physics, and calculus is usually where you'd start. These classes are in series that take one year to complete. If your school follows a semester system, then there's Chem 1A and 1B, and you want to take them back to back. After you finish with some basics (most schools don't require a year of calculus or physics, usually 2 quarters or 1 semester course).

Then there are upper division classes that draw upon what you learned in chem and bio. These are Human Anatomy and Biochem (some schools don't require at all, some one semester, very few want a whole year).

If you will not be getting a bachelors before admitting into pharm schools, some require certain GEs like humanities, psychology, economics, music, art, and so on. Some even with bachelors require you to take them.

Take your electives wisely- choose pharm-related or health-related electives like chemical warfare, drugs and poisons, immunology, etc.

Some pharm schools don't accept AP scores and transfer as credits, some do. I'd suggest you research, look at the websites of the pharm schools you think you may want to apply later on and go from there.

Good luck!

The 1st year I started my prereqs I took accelerated general chemistry over summer then took Biology, Physics and Ochem the first year then physiology, MB and cell molec that kind of stuff the second year.

I would definitely check with advising at your school, or with someone who is going to the pharmacy school you are interested in attending, because there are a variety of requirements for each school. Now I know that isn't much help in actually answering your question.. but it really does vary based on the school.
I don't know how much help it would be to give you my schedule, but I'll try and generalize it as much as possible. I had high school AP credit for physics, statistics, calculus, english, and history. I go to UNC, by the way, and this is generally how I finished the rest of my prereqs:

1st Fall semester:
Gen chem 1 and lab
Intro bio and lab
Pre-1700 history (required perspective)
Foreign language level 1
PE 1 (required perspective)

1st spring semester:
Gen chem 2 and lab
English elective
Philosophy (required perspective)
History elective
Foreign language level 2

Summer:
Analytical chem and lab

2nd Fall semester:
Intro anatomy/physiology
Organic chem level 1
Elective
PE 2 (required perspective)
Psychology (elective)
Foreign language level 3
Service elective

2nd Spring semester:
Astronomy (elective)
Organic chem level 2 and lab
Microbiology
Sociology (required perspective)

Hopefully that helps - and hopefully it shows you that there should be time for you to take some electives that you're interested in if you paln your schedule correctly. Although, for all but the summer and 2nd spring semester, I was enrolled in 17 or 18 hours, but that wasn't really a problem - plus it's probably comparable to a semester's workload in pharmacy school. But definitely go see your advisor - advisors at our school had worksheets that laid out all of our requirements, which made it a lot easier to plan a schedule. Anyway, I really hope that's helpful, and let me know if you have any questions or need any assistance!

I would go to one of the schools that offers a pre-pharm program, or a pre-professional sciences program, or even one of the 6-year PharmD programs, and see if they list a sample of courses. I know that Hampton (www.hamptonu.edu) lists something on their website. If you go to this page http://www.hamptonu.edu/academics/schools/pharmacy/prospects/admissions.htm you can check out the "Pre-professional" coursework (first 2 years of a 6-year program), and then you can check out the "Professional" part (last 4 years).

Anyhow, take a gander at what they say is the typical pre-pharm program and start scheduling classes similar to that. Keep in mind, however, that certain schools will have certain required classes: church-affiliated schools will generally require a Religion or Philosophy course, and Hampton requires an African-American history course.

Hope that helps!

My credit hours keep climbing haha. Partly by design to build up to heavy course loads and partly because I want to be done with this and get on to the next part. Plus I really wanted the pharm tech and I decided it was worth the extra work.
