I'm currently a third-year medical student, and I'm trying to plan when I should take Step II CS. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how difficult it is to schedule this exam on short notice, if I have flexibility with dates and locations -- in my specific case, I may choose to register for CS at the last minute, in March of 2012, which will be a vacation month for me. I could go to any center in the US at any time in that month, but I'd need to have taken the test somewhere by April 1st. Under those circumstances, how difficult would it be, do you think, to schedule CS? Is there high demand during March? Is it difficult to schedule a test last-minute?

Chill the heck out. I'm a 4th year student and I haven't scheduled mine yet.

You get 1 year of eligibility to schedule your exam from the date that you purchase it. It is fairly easy to schedule your exam, go on prometrics and pick a date just like what you did for the prior usmles. Obviously, the closer you get to the test date, the more likely it is going to be booked full already. You should schedule a tentative date now and change it later when you have a better idea of your availability. If you reschedule before 2 weeks time to your test date, there is no fee.

i heard they are going to eventually stop requiring CS among AMGs, true? when are they going to change it?

Those rumors have been flying around for the last 3 years or so. (at least). Pretty remarkable considering the test hasn't been around for more than 7 years, IIRC.

Assume you'll have to take it. Be pleasantly surprised if you don't.
