Besides the part of the amcas that you fill out that says "I am from state X," how does a state school know that you are from their state?

I think they know..

And even if they didnt, have you ever been to one interview in which they didnt ask where you are from?

They know. Even if they don't know they can ask for proof, and if you don't ahve it then they'll know for sure.

I know in Texas I was asked for proof (lease, work documents, etc.) before I was considered a state resident. It depends on the state though what stuff they need to see to prove you lived there for the time they state.

Also if you lie about what state, they can kick you out of med school for it, since some states have laws stating exactly what percentage of students must be state residents.

All the Virginia schools require you to send a separate application for in-state educational privileges WITH your secondary app. Meaning, you have to send this + copies of your 1040 tax return, driver's license, car registration, and voting registration. They make it explicitly clear that unless you submit all forms of documentation, you will be considered an out-of-state applicant.

Can't argue with that.

whoops... I meant your VA resident tax return form (760), not the 1040 (federal).
