I recently transferred from my local community college to university. (I will be completing all my pre med courses at said university.) While at cc, though, I completed all but one of the courses required for an AA degree. I am weighing the pros and cons of taking the class and obtaining the degree, as it will be several years until I graduate with my BA.

My question is: How do adcoms view associates degrees? Would it be a neutral part of my application, as the BA obviously trumps it? Or, could it become a negative item, if obtained, as it might draw attention to my community college experience?…which I have heard that adcoms view as less rigorous, academically speaking. I'm just curious how you guys see it, thanks!

Also a question of mine.

Well, not sure how they view the degree overall as well. However, if you have good reasons as to why you are taking the degree, then graduate with the AA. Since you are working your way up from community college to university, the adcoms should see it as a positive thing.

I'm sure they don't care as getting an AA is more like a 'participation award' in your church basketball league.

I have an A.S. and I didn't think twice about it.

I'm sure it might be useful if you are trying to find a job while getting your BS

This seems like a good way to view it. Thanks for the reply.

I always thought you get one automatically after finishing 2 years of college 😵

It won't matter if you have one or not. The only time my AA came up during this application cycle was during an interview when they looked at it and saw that it was in business (I changed my major after getting the AA). Completing it in business showed that I had enough business credits to be considered for an associates, which was nice. But I can’t tell you if it helped or not, they were just interested enough to ask about it. If I had done it in biology, which is what my bachelors was in, they probably could have cared less…
