I applied as SES disadvantaged and AMCAS classified me as disadvantaged according to their own system of classification.

How exactly does this affect admission choices, if it affects it at all? Some schools are asking me for family income and assets from 20-25 years ago and requesting essays and such. I have no trouble confirming all of this, but I'm just curious how this will play out in the admissions process. Is it akin to getting a GPA/MCAT/EC boost? Or do schools do this more for their own benefit, to look at the demographics of applicants?
