I obtained my MD and finished an internship in family medicine. However, clinical medicine just didn't fit well with me and I'm interested in transitioning into a career in clinical research. My problem is that I have no background in research at all and have no idea where to start. What steps should I take? How do I search for jobs? What jobs are I qualified to do? I'm kind of overwhelmed with how to transition and any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Well, hopefully some senior members will chime in, but I think folks might need more information to really answer this. Are you practicing in an academic setting currently? Are you open to doing more schooling? What are you interested in researching?

With family medicine as your specialty I think public health might be the way to go and then I think getting an MPH and potentially a DrPH or PhD would be a way to slip into research at the ground level.

Really though, we can't give advice unless you are more specific about your research and career aims.

In brief, finish residency then do research fellowship. Don't give up your clinical training/abilities as the job market in research with medicine is terrible.

👍 Get the most out of your MD, you really don't need another degree to do research. A research based fellowship is a good way to go. I knew a few people in my post doc lab who were doing research this way.

If at all possible, try to at least finish the two more years of FM residency.

I know a family medicine doctor who does some high level clinical research in vaccination. I believe he got an MPH after FM residency.
