Hey guys I knew to the forums so I just wanted to say hi to all! Also, I just wanted to give an overview and see if you guys can let me know if im on the right track. Im in my junior year at ASU and I have bio 1, gen chem 1 and 2, anatomy 1 and 2 finished (i got an A in all of these). I am currently taking ochem 1 and lovin it. Next semester I am planning to take ochem 2, bio 2, and physics 1 altogether at once. I am hoping to to the dat that following june and start applying so my final year before dental school will be my senior year at ASU and during this final year I will finish my nutrition major and take biochem and micro. I am currently in a service learning class which I will have 100 hours of community service done by the end of the semester at the local boys and club. Midway during december I plan on starting to shadow a dentist so I can start racking up those hours. My current cum gpa is 3.87. I hope to fund dental via loan for service from the BIE since I am 1/4 native american. I live in mesa arizona right down the street from ATSTILL. I would like to go to this school or midwestern but I know I have to apply to many schools but I would rather stay on the westcoast. Do I have any advantage being 3/4 hispanic and 1/4 native american along with my background? Thanks in advance.

May i ask why your taking ochem 2 instead of biochem?

Right now I'm doing good in ochem got 100s on quizzes and 95 on the first test and I understand what is goin on so I'm not concerned about my grade I put my time and effort into classes to most of the time get A's. I see on many prereq list for dental that is says 1 year of ochem.

Definitely take two semesters of organic, I don't know what Choob is saying, and if you do well in organic, it should help you on the DAT. I understood it really well, and didn't even study for the organic section and received a 28 on it, so keep up the work in organic, and i am sure you will be prepared for next year.

I might be wrong but i thought bio chem considered organic. Because my advisor advised me to take biochem instead of ochem 2, and i am wondering which class prepares you better for the DAT?

I think most schools definitely want to see ochem2 and lots of schools require bio-chem as well. take both.

ochem 2 will help you more for the DAT by far then bio-chem, however.

You're on the right track bro... Your grades are awesome and it looks like you have a good plan for the rest of your EC's. You are totally correct by taking O chem 2, you may want to add biochem and microbio to your list as well, because a lot of schools are requiring those as well.

You should join the Pre-Dental club on campus. We constantly have service projects and dental related activities going on. Actually last week we had about 6 students from ASDOH come and give a presentation and do a Q & A session. I am pretty involved so if you have any questions shoot me a PM. 😀

Also i forgot.... being hispanic and native american does give you a bonus for lack of a better word. It gives you URM status. What that means is that you are a under represented minority in higher education.

i dont know about gould, but seriously consider taking courses at west, or in your case poly. the classes are a lot smaller, ands a hellova lot easier getting the teacher to remember your name.

(just for reference sakes, i took orgo1 at scc (dr. hendrickson), and orgo2 at west (dixon))

i will say, it was fun venturing into a lengthy discussion about scotch in dixons class.

There are not many schools/programs where you can jump into anatomy before finishing bio.

Ya Omar all the classes I have taken have been at poly and hopefully the rest will be also. I love smaller classes. I'll have to look to see if Dixon is teaching ochem 2 again next semester. Toothache, I'm not sure but it didn't have any prereqs for anp but it was nice to knock those out during the summer. I am hoping that taking bio2, ochem2, and physics at the same time next semester will help me do good on the DAT (along with studying) in the summer since they will still be fresh in my mind.

Gould is the best teacher at ASU. you'd be crazy to take o chem with anyone else if you had he option to take it with Gould.

Good to know. I've seen a *LOT* of professors' ochem websites, and Gould's site at ASU is the best I've seen.

I have been using chadsreview.org. its the best for ochem.

Seems you are on the right track. Like someone said, join the pre-dent club. Also you should know Dr. Bluespruce is the first Native American dentist and also acts in some administrative capacity for ASDOH. Being NA will be to your advantage at least at ASDOH. The school has a pretty active (at least I've heard) NA club. Good luck!
