yes i know that schools arent suppose to hand out "official acceptance" before Dec 1.

but does anyone have any insight into how applicants are accepted before this date?

for ex. do they just have a bunch of interviews in the fall and when it nears Dec.1 the ad com get together and determine the people they want to accept?

or do the ad com meet regularly before Dec.1 to accept/reject applicants? to build a growing list which are resolved come Dec.1?

anyone know?

the best way to look at it this is via doc tooth's file. for example tufts interviews only about 11% of their applications, but then accepts 74% of those interviewed. meaning post interview based on the 2011 stats (2010 entering class) you have a 74% chance of being accepted. find docs file and do the analysis.

thats the only way to look at it. otherwise just wait for dec 1 and see what happens.

In relation to this question, if they accept you, how long do you have to accept the offer? What if you have post december interviews in Jan or Feb?

im not 100% sure but i believe you can hold multiple offers until march 1 or april 1 and then you have to pick your school. also schools tend to have deposit dates by when you must submit a $1,000 or so to "hold your seat." (again im not 100% sure of this but think that thats the process.)

i think you have enough time for most schools to make a good choice, unless your waitlisted somewhere and have to bite the bullet and lose a bit of money.

You have a few months to decide where you want to go. But the sooner you decide, the better, since you won't have to try to wait for interviews elsewhere and you actually leave your reserved spots in the schools that already accepted you for someone who actually really really wants to go there. It's a courteous thing to do, but you do have the right to be selfish and wait until you feel 110% confident that you want one particular school and wait til a week before you have to give up your seat at the schools you don't want to attend as much. It's a serious 4 year and possibly longer commitment, after all. I haven't even dated anybody for that long. Dang. Kitty still wants to play 😛

No one is "accepted" until he/she has a letter/e-mail in their hands. In all likelihood, there are 60 different approaches to the methodology of accepting a ds class. It is hard to imagine that this process can be done in a single day.

Based on this logic, if you have your interview scheduled for mid November, it affects your chances (and not in a good way!).

i didnt say they'd do it in a single day. But for non-rolling admission schools they do use this type of method; as in they wait until they finish evaluating all the applicants in every category (interview/gpa/ec..etc). make a ranking of everyone from top to bottom, the top 80% [for example] gets an acceptance offer letter, then the ad-com gather and "discuss" the remaining few who are around the cut off area to determine who they want to extend the offer to.

if this is the case for Dec-1 acceptance offer then it doesnt really matter when your pre-dec interview is.

but if they accept people on a rolling basis even before Dec-1 i'm gonna guess that having the earlier interview would help your chances.
