I am applying this cycle, and was wondering how my ECs are. I transferred schools after ~a year an a half from my local state university to the states "flag-ship" school. I know the ad-comms. are big on "consistency", I don't know if I would meet there definition. Basically my EC's are:

-since high school but couldn't stay as involved with I transferred to other school: heavily involved with my temple, doing community projects, leadership, fundraising etc.
-for last two semesters: shadowing/ volunteering weakly(5-6hrs) at primary care doctors office
-one semester: worked on political campaign for semester (will start interning at congressional office next semester)
-three semesters public health independent research, one project at first school and two other projects at other school. presented first two, and submitted last one to journal(in review)
-at first school( for three semesters): AAMC chapter(volunteering, relay for life, attended meets etc.)...joined but didn't really stay active after transferring
-one semester apo volunteer(basically did a bunch of community volunteering like tutoring underprivileged kids, planting trees etc.)
-2 months during summer: hospital shadowing internship program
-2 months during summer: over seas volunteer(mainly non-clinical teaching English to kids, but some clinical exposure)
-spring break-overseas medical volunteer
-last 3 semesters:club swimming(don't know if this counts for anything)

I have also heard the ad-coms like non-clinical service, are the few things listed enough? Also, I have no consistent official school club I was a part of, will that be a potential problem that I will have to explain.

I have ~1.5 month after my mcat this summer, I am going to con't involvement with my temple, but is there anything else I should do to "fill in the gaps"

Bump...no replies??? Come one guys...just wanted some feed back on my ECs

I might not be the best person to take advice from since I am only a sophomore now, however I think it is good that you have a wide variety of EC's. The one thing I would say to improve your EC's is maybe to make a large commitment to some of them. I think it is better to have a long-term commitment to an few EC's as opposed to doing a many activities for only a few months or a semester at a time.

Good luck.

EC's are decent.

Most people who apply have the basic shadowing/clinical volunteer work/some leadership etc and that's basically it.

It's not necessary to do a lot just for the fact you plan on applying to med school which I'm not assuming anything, but you EC's are good. Do what you like etc.

I think if you continue the shadowing/volunteering, political activism, and public health research, they would be good examples of long-term commitment.

However I must say the fact that you are "volunteering weakly" concerns me.

You're fine as long as you keep on doing clinical stuff. Most of the people I've met (who've gotten into some amazing schools) only do research and hospital stuff and maybe one other club.
