I am currently a Junior double majoring in BS biology, and BS psychology at Virginia Tech. I am on the 5 year plan, so i wouldn't be applying until the end of next year. My freshman year was not the greatest with a 3.01 average gpa. sophomore year was slightly better at a 3.25. and a 3.19 overall. Junior year I am looking at ~3.9 (strong upward trend), and a 3.44 overall come the spring. Hopefully, by the time I apply my GPA will be around a 3.55, and a BCMP gpa of around a 3.29. I am a NJ EMT (I am a NJ resident) and volunteer at my local rescue squad. I am also a Certified Nurses Assistant. I will be working in a hospital this summer, and studying to take the MCATs in august.

I am looking at both MD and DO schools. I just can't really tell where I stand with my numbers.

If you have a high MCAT 33+ you can still be moderately competitive for MD, but your stats by the time you apply assuming you do get a 3.55 cum and 3.29 science will be on par with a DO app with a 28+.

At some MD schools, it isn't just about gross numbers, as trend is taken into account. So do you best to keep your GPA at 3.7+ from now on.

Also, some schools give less weight to freshman year, some give more weight to more recent years, and others may throw out your worst semester.

So, take it slow and steady, develop your ECs in a way that won't compromise your ability to get great grades, and depending on MCAT score, plan to apply to both MD and DO schools when the time comes.

If you got a C- or below in any science prerequisite, consider retaking it.
