This can be the start of a new post dealing with all the intricacies of applying to Prelim years Tranny years or whatever other options there are?

How about we start with the basics

1. What extra steps are taken in the application process to apply for a prelim year and a derm residency?
2. How many Programs did you apply to for Preliminary year?
3. How did you make your decisions about how many you would apply too and where you would apply?
4. What criteria if any, did you use to narrow down your prelim year choices post interview?
5. For those that finished a prelim year, if you knew then what you know now, what would you have done differently?
6. If you didnt match into derm right away, how could you improve your odds during prelim year?

These are all questions I, and some of my future applying colleages probably have, if anyone could answer some or all of them, I am sure it would be more than helpful.

Thanks,
Izzy

1. None, you just click the boxes of programs you wish to apply to. If you're good enough for derm, you more than qualify for the TY/prelims.

2. 10 is more than enough. $60 buys you 10.

3. I went with 10. Some will link prelims with each derm interview they have. Can get expensive. On the other hand, it saves you the moving fee when transitioning from intern to PGY-2.

4. Location and elective months. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a bald-faced liar.

5. The advice I've gotten from residents is: "Pick a cushier intern year." The advice from attendings is: "Pick as rigorous an intern year as possible." Everything in moderation seems to be the appropriate strategy.

6. Schmoozing, derm electives, research, fellowships. I have been informed that while fellowships are the best way, not getting in on the 1st try is usually a red flag and you're facing an uphill battle.
