How do you get your research ideas?

I was wondering how everybody here arrives at their research ideas.

Steal them from others. Divine inspiration. Fortune cookies/bazooka gum comics. You know the usual ways.

Read discussion sections.

One could argue that is stealing from others.

Nah. Discussion sections aren't worth a hill of beans for research ideas. Everyone knows that there are few ideas of substance that ever get put in those as people tend to hold back their best ideas. You want to discuss ethics, think about what Rosenthal said about that practice.

I've never been short on research ideas, but then again I am always looking for them, even got a pretty good dissertation idea from NPR...

in-lab brainstorming sessions + reading reading reading, its a great way to learn to think like an academic

I research what truly piques my intellectual curiosity and ignites my passions. It makes the research less like work and more like exploring a mystery.

I was just kidding. But what did Rosenthal say?

There's been a resurgence of interest in multidisciplinary research lately. Expanding your research focus "horizontally" is one way to develop research questions. Convergence of evidence from various methodologies and disciplines is important!

Dude, is this a serious request to help you learn how to get ideas? Or is this just a new topic of conversation for something to do?

I tend to gravitate toward research that needs to be done (e.g., pressing issues that aren't getting enough attention). The urgency makes it more compelling to pursue.

What??? Not to be mean, but you have some of the most unusual postings (e.g., "UK Ok," "Know Your Role", etc.). Are you a grad student or are you writing these posts during patient break time at the psychiatric hospital?

I was trying to figure out how to respond. I wanted to know if you really needed help, or if you were just throwing out a new topic of convo.

Have you seen this?

I have an interest in an area that is up and coming currently but with a population that hasn't been analyzed....so for me it's pretty easy, actually!
