Because dental school is a full-time endeavor, how do dental students survive? Do most live off of loans? Or take part time jobs?

Loans, baby! Keep 'em coming! If you're worried about loans, good ol' Uncle Sam will throw some bucks at you for letting the Army or Navy own you for a few years. Before you commit to this, do the math. It's a shtty deal.

Some people get part-time jobs, working a few hours a week, but most take out extra money for living expenses.

I agree with the above post. The last thing you'll want to do after a day at dental school is go to work. And, for the most part, working isn't even a possibility the first couple of years.

Turn dem tricks baby. Just keep your pimp-hand strong, and it's all gravy baby.

Loans, more loans, and even more loans. I can't imagine working a part-time job after being at school for 12 hours. However, if the job were every night from 9 until midnight and I was allowed to study uninteruppted during that time, it would be possible. But, I haven't found anything like that . . . and I haven't been looking.

If you look real closely, OMFSRES's new kid looks just like me...

hey, i just only started dental school, however, i work at kaplan teaching the SAT. its really easy work, and only 6 hrs a week, and they pay really well, around $20/hr. so its like an extra $400/month, can definately come in handy. however, if i notice it hurting me academically, i'll definately quit. good luck

I would rather pay off loans than take a job I have absolutely no interest in. If things get really tight, I will just seek an emergency loan and continue to live off credit like 77% of the country is already doing. Really, there is nothing wrong with living off loans while in dental school since you will have the required earning potential to effectively deal with the debt as long as you don't go overboard.

Many people with regular 9 to 5's are living well beyond their means with the hopes that a big pay day is coming. This is supported by the fact that 60% of all home loans last year were interest only. The prevading logic (arguably) was that they would take the interest only loans with the hope that they would get raises in the near future to handle the subsequent interest rate increases.

This is risky business indeed.

Dental school is a unique situation since everyone from the "best in show" to the last guy or gal in line will jump into the sratosphere in salary after school unless they go for specialization, but even then there is a definite light at the end of the tunnel.

With a corporate job, that potential raise could be a downsize out the door. Take care and GOD bless.

I am going to tutor for 2 hours on sundays, $25/hr.
and probably I'll waste another hour driving and getting ready. It would pay my cell phone bills and some of my monthly expenses.
Do u guys think if this is worth it with first year course work at ucla?

For 50 bucks a week? I dont think its worth it. I just see that as a waste of time. Of course, if you are that strapped for cash, then do it. Your time is much more valuable though, in my opinion.

Totally not worth it. Think about the gas money.
