Well, UNLV is my first choice. I just wonder how do you guys think about UNLV.
If you were accepted in multiple schools, would u choose UNLV over the others ?

I haven't been to UNLV, but I was wondering if anyone noticed this on the ADA page and was concerned:
NV
University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine
Shadow Lane Campus
1001 Shadow Lane
Las Vegas, NV 89106-4124
Dean: Dr. Karen P. West
Phone: (702) 774-2500
Accreditation Status: Approval with Reporting Requirements (intent to withdraw)
Last Accreditation Visit: 2006
Next Accreditation Visit: 2013
Web Address: dentalschool.unlv.edu/

Intent To Withdraw: A formal warning utilized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation to notify an accredited program and the communities of interest that the program's accreditation will be withdrawn if compliance with accreditation standards and/or policies cannot be demonstrated by a specified date. The warning is usually for a six-month period, unless the Commission extends for good cause.

Sorry to be a downer, but I noticed this and thought I should bring it up. I emailed the ADA and they said if the school is accredited when you matriculate, then you will graduate from an accredited program, even if accreditation is withdrawn while you're still in dental school. This might, however, have an effect if you decide to specialize... then again, who knows which part of their dental program is having trouble meeting requirements.

Btw, I didn't mean to hijack your thread - but it might affect your decision to choose UNLV if you have multiple acceptances.

Isn't that basically because of the ortho program having so many probs and not the DDS prog?

I'm surprised the ADA seems more concerned with UNLV's standards then with those that will get the nod in Mexico and India.

has anyone asked the school about this?

Found the following:

At its July 26, 2007 meeting, the Commission on Dental Accreditation adopted a resolution to grant the accreditation status of "approval with reporting requirements with intent to withdraw accreditation in February 2008" for the advanced specialty education program in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics sponsored by the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

The advanced specialty education program in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation [
and has been granted the accreditation status of “approval with reporting requirement s with intent to withdraw accreditation in February 2008”]. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. The Commission on Dental Accreditation can be contacted at (312) 440-4653 or at 211 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611.

I should have included this information from the same report.

"Finally, we are pleased to report that 100% of the Class of 2007 passed the ABO Part II Written Examination, which was above the national average. In addition our resident from Canada also passed the National Dental Specialty Examination in Orthodontics of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada."

I don't plan on specializing, but I hope the school is able to keep the program. ABO is the American Board of Orthodontics

i was thoroughly impressed with UNLV when i interviewed there back in october. for months it was my first choice. in january i was invited to interview at VCU. i took a week to decide if i wanted to attend the VCU interview, as i had already been accepted to two other schools and deposited at one (neither acceptance was UNLV). finally i decided to attend the VCU interview and i'm incredibly glad i did; my experience there made it an easy 1st choice and i was accepted the week after the interview.

for me, VCU is the better fit. however, UNLV is a sweet school and to answer your question: had i not gone to VCU yet had been accepted at all of my other 4 interviews UNLV would've been an easy choice.

I'm a current dental student at UNLV SDM and think it is a wonderful school with great potential. Faculty is top notch (each faculty member is highly regarded in each of their fields) inculding our neuroanatomist who used to teach at Harvard, and the clinical faculty are very good, and supportive. The students all get along well and are non-comptetitive and help each other out. It's a tough program but I'm happy to be here.
