How do you update med schools on summer ECs

So this summer I'm doing research on islet transplants for diabetics and shadowing an orthopedic surgeon. I didn't put those on my ECs on my amcas as I hadn't done them yet. Since my app is already verified how do I let the med schools I'm applying to know i am doing this. I know some med schools ask you what you are doing during the summer on their secondaries but others don't. what should I do?

It may be too early to send an update letter. Since you haven't even started your research and volunteering, they won't do any good on the AMCAS app at this point. I would probably wait till the secondary stage because by then you will have accumulated some hours and thus can actually talk about what you'll be doing in the lab and the hospital.. Many schools specifically ask for activity updates on their secondaries or you can simply send an update letter then...just my thought
