How does getting "wait listed" work?

Looking for some information about getting wait listed! I'm not sure if its an on going process or one is a last ditch contact if someone drops out! Thanks in advance for the help!

From what I've heard it really depends on the school. Some schools have much more movement on the waitlist than others. Do you have a specific school in mind? I'm sure someone here would be able to answer your specific questions.
