Hi everyone! After weeks of lurking on these threads trying to research schools, I'd like your opinion on my list of prospective schools. As a brief background, my MCAT is 29 (not interested in retaking this cycle) and GPA 3.7. I have around 300 hours of clinical volunteering and 40 hours of shadowing from both MD and DO doctors. I am a Florida resident and ORM (Vietnamese, so unsure if this is still considered URM)

1. Florida State
2. Rosalind Franklin
3. Florida Atlantic
4. New York Medical College
5. Eastern Virginia
6. Rush Medical
7. University South Florida
8. Penn State
9. Virginia Commonwealth
10. University Central Florida
11. Florida International
12. University of Florida
13. Loyola Stritch
14. Temple
15. Nova (DO)
16. Touro CA (DO)
17. Philadelphia College (DO)
18. Midwestern (DO)
19. Maybe Wake Forest, Drexel or Albert Einstein?

Thank you!

Your MCAT is well below the 10th percentile for AECOM. Seems like too far of a reach to me. I would consider adding Drexel/Wake forest. Maybe more DOs.

To be honest, Vietnamese is only ORM if you are applying in CA, TX, and maybe FL. Otherwise, most places haven't even heard of Vietnam. I would bulk up on East Coast and Southern states. I don't think you have a shot in hell at Albert Einstein, but my guess is as good as anyone's!

Good luck

Looks like a fine list. You're competitive for any DO school.

19. Wake Forest,
Drexel

Thank you for your input! I'm unsure if the aamcas allows for me to specify "Vietnamese" so I guess I would put that information in my personal statement/secondaries?
I definitely took out AECOM but as far as southern schools go I didn't include more because msar made it seem many weren't very oos-friendly.

Pretty much every asian diaspora that has landed in the s has resulted from a major conflict... It's all a matter of how you sell it, but I personally don't believe in ORMs. So eh --- no chips on my shoulders. Anyway, I dont remember being able to list specific nation of origin/heritage with AMCAS.

Generally most Asians are ORM unless you come from a country with a major on-going conflict that has personally impacted you.

Actually that is not true. Vietnamese, Khmer, and Lao are the lowest of the Asian ethnic groups in SES and education in the states. It is because most a newer immigrants and have no real community support systems. Its usually Chinese, Korean, and Indian that are ORM, but this is my opinion from being more aware and not lumping all Asians together.

There is a huge Vietnamese/Khmer/Lao community in New York tri-state area and Philadelphia, practically no one in the medical community to serve them. But, I could be completely wrong and I have yet to find these doctors/medical professions. (Pharmacists aside.)

But then again Adcoms do lump all Asians together so me arguing makes no difference here.
