How would one go about becoming the president of a club in college? For instance, let's say I'm a sophomore and the current premed president is graduating. How would I take his place?

Start your own club.
OR
Hostile takeover.
OR
Be yourself, if you're a natural leader, people will like you and want you to be their leader. Don't fake it or else you'll end up with a bunch of responsibility you can't handle.

Also, don't get too caught up on pre-med club, its not that appealing to an adcom.

Will it look bad or just not good?

Depends on the club. Most of them hold some type of election. It is good to strive to hold some form of office. It looks a lot better to be heavily vested in one club than just a member of a lot of clubs. But do what you enjoy, don't just do it because you think it looks good.

Good advice. Thanks.

At my institution (many years ago), there was such low attendance at any club meeting that if you showed up to a club on the wrong day (officer election day), you were defaulted to one of the positions. Past that, it was a double elimination of rock/paper/scissors* as to which spot you were appointed to... Looser had to take president.

* this was before rock/paper/scissors/lizard/Spock became common amongst geeky pre-meds.

If you want something like that, I am sure that the other socially awkward science people would vote for you. 🙂

Be involved in clubs you are interested in. There are VERY few people interested in the "premed" club. If you are passionate about something (I was president of the culinary society at my school), you naturally get to a leadership position.

Effort is mostly what it requires. The threshold for elected leadership in most college clubs is quite low. Appear serious about it and not just in it for the resume (i.e. willing to do a good job) and people will probably vote for you. Being well-liked helps a lot, probably more than any actual leadership ability.

Also show up to the meetings, talk to as many members as you can, be constructive, and have a good roadmap for the club/organization.
