How does tutoring my girlfriend sound lol?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
aren't ec's in medical school used for residency placement?

They're basically one of the last things residency directors look at, if they even look at them at all. Rec letters, clinical grades and step 1/2 scores come out way ahead of almost any EC you do in medical school. The difference is that residency directors aren't looking for you to volunteer at their hospital's free clinic, they're looking for smart residents who'll slave away for their program for the next 3-4-5 years.

If you're doing school EC's in medical school, you're pretty much doing it for fun. It might give you something to talk about but besides that it's not giving you much of a leg up over the competition.

Ahh I was under the impression that many residiencies want you to perform research

if you do include it on your app you'll have to make sure your gf NEVER sees your app because when she sees that you took credit for tutoring her on your AMCAS you either won't get laid for a long time or she'll break up with you

haha, my worry is that of things such as Facebook or something that will show that, "Hey, this dude is in a relationship with the girl he tutored!"

were u planning on including her name in your app?!

Bah, I'm still torn with this!!! I feel like I don't have many EC's/crappy ec's compared to everyone on studoc!

to resummarize quickly:

-150 hrs hospital volunteering
-1 yr cancer research 5 hrs/week
-75 hrs shadowing
-30 hrs internist
- 9 hrs pediatric residents
- 9 hrs cardiothoracic surgery (also interacted with anaesthesiologist)
- 9 hours GI doctor
- 9 hours Pulmonology
-9 hours Allergy/Immunology
(The 9 hour shifts were part of a competitive program I got accepted too)
- Fall-Taught 8 week chem course to an underpriv. elementary school 2 hrs/week-JEP Program
- Math Mentor- spring semester- 2 hrs/week at a underprivileged elementary school- JEP Program
-Raised 300ish cans of food to donate

Hobbies: Football (both intermeural and part of a club of friends who play), Guitar (can only play like 20 chords though), Piano (learning), and Drums (took formal lessons for a few years), Snowboarding (during winter vacations), Weightlifting (4 years-imp. to me)

As you guys can see if I group things up like I'm suppose to I'm only going to have like 5 slots filled. Plus, I do think tutoring the physics really showed me that I really like to teach!

I'm gonna semi-step on the thread a bit...

I tutored (both with learning center in a group setting and privately) as a way to help earn extra income and also worked part time. I've listed myself as the contact because I tutored privately for 3 years. For me, yes it may have been an EC/teaching experience, but it also was part of my paid income. Are you saying, just because it wasn't free, I shouldn't list it??

I was a paid tutor and didn't list it. If you're only listing it to make your list of activities look longer, it will be very obvious.

you should definitely list it. teaching is something that med schools are looking for because as an upperclassman you will be teaching lowerclassmen and as a resident u'll be teaching med students etc etc. it's a good quality to demonstrate you have and are interested in doing.

Part of me disagrees. I think paid tutor could have been a reasonable addition to the list. It may be that the person who reads your app runs a med student tutoring program or was a tutor themselves during their pre-med years.

I think a lot of the application process is putting as many components of who YOU are into that application to maximize the probability that the person who is reading your application will somehow identify with you... or at least part of you.

I'm not listing it just to make my activities "longer". They were part of who I am. I mean it's not "most meaningful" but it helped me partially pay for rent and food. It wasn't a sure thing to always have students, so I also worked in campus housing and later as a bartender on campus to supplement the tutoring.

Don't listen to those saying not to list it. The activities section is for each person to fill with work experience, volunteer activities, etc. working as a paid tutor for 3 years is employment. List it. It amazes me some of the responses you will get on here.
