I don't know if this is the right forum, but I'm speaking from a pre-med's pov.

As a doctor, how far are you willing to commute to the hospital or clinic you'll be working at?

I go to school is the big city of Houston, and you do NOT want to be caught anywhere near a freeway between the hours of 3:00 and 7:00 pm. Sometimes there's still traffic before and after those hours, it's ridiculous. I know a P.A. that lives on the out-skirts of Houston, but his place of work is located near the downtown area. Because traffic is so awful, he drives to a "park and ride" parks his car there and takes a bus to work everyday. It's so much cheaper and easier to use the park and rid because of gas, etc. And if you've ever been to Houston, you know that people here cannot drive to save their lives, so taking the bus is also safer lol.

Right now I'm very interested in EM, so let's say I become an emergency physician. In a perfect world, I would want to work in a cushy suburb no more than 10-20 minutes away from my home lol. EM has crazy hours and I wouldn't want to be on the road for an extended period after a long shift, if that makes any sense lol.

How about you guys?

Well, from where I live and to the hospital I volunteer at, its 20 miles away. But I take the highway and it takes me about 20 mins to reach the hospital. But during rush hour, it becomes 30 mins. As long as the neighborhood is okay, I don't mind the commute.

Try commuting in Chicago. Yeah I definitely would need to live close-ish to my hospital/clinic. But that's a looong way of to be worrying about, isn't it?

with some of the jobs I interviewed at, there was a requirement to live within 30 minutes of the hospital even tho I was not an admitting physician.

right now I'm a little less than 10 minutes away to my clinic and that has been awesome. (30 from hosp)

Ideally I'd like to be able to walk to my place of work, or live in a city with great mass transit so I don't have to drive. Traffic in any big city is horrendous - Houston is no exception. The few times I've been stuck in Tampa traffic make me see why commutes can literally be the death of people.
