I've done a search and can't seem to find a solid answer. I'm an intern and want to take Step III now while my schedule is light (and because I'm getting stupider by the day) as I drift from some medicine and primary care type education.

Has anyone taken Step III in intern year? Do you truly need to have completed the year before you can apply for it? What's up with the state thing and applying for your license at the same time, and do you have to apply for your license at the same time, or can you apply after you finish intern year?

Thanks for your responses!

Requirements vary by state with some being as simple as just graduating medical school and others requiring a certain number of months of internship.

That being said you can register through any state (i.e. the one with the most lax requirements) and still take the test in your home state. So in your case just find a state that has requirements that you can meet and register there.

From what I've seen, most people who are in a prelim year (either Med or Surgery) , or in a Transitional Year, tend to take it towards the end of the Intern year, since they are going to forget that stuff once they go into Rads, Derm, Anesthesia, etc. For residents in categorical IM, Surgery, EM, Ob/Gyn, etc, it doesn't matter as much if you take it early, since you are going to continue in those areas throughout residency and will be more knowledgable as the years go by. Plus, you may have more time to study in second or third year. I still see a lot of interns in those fields take it early though, just to get it out of the way.

That was my thought, take it early to get it out of the way. Just want to make sure I can sign up for it and take it without being required to pay for a license that I'm not qualified (haven't completed intern year) to sign up for...

what a messed up system!

Just register through a state with no requirements (ie California, Connecticut). You may have no intention of ever visiting one of those states, but no one cares. I personally was in residency in NY, registered through CT, and took the test in CA. Yes, this makes no sense, but that's the way it is.

We were required to take it by mid-Nov of intern year. As an intern in surgery, it was probably best - since so much of it was primary care/medicine that I'll soon have stored away in a distant brain cell which will become difficult to access.

for foreign grads, you have to have your ecfmg certificate in your possession as you'll be required to enter your issue date on the app and fsmb will check with ecfmg about your status.
i don't know why everyone doesn't just use connecticut as the sponsoring state- no requirements aside from grad(in us) or ecfmg cert.

thats an honest way to lie!! LOL. Incredible how that website incites you to lie!!! LOL.

That website makes it sound like it's only for IMG. Can you do that for US MDs?

Does anyone know of any problems obtaining a license in a state other than the state you took step 3 under?

For example, say I took step 3 under connecticut or california, but wanted to get a license in new york....any problems?
