How fast does time fly in the reading room?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I check the clock only when I want to document in my report that I have communicated a finding with someone. And even in that case, the dictation software automatically put the time in the bracket.

There is not one correct answer to your question. People are different with different personalities. If radiology is not for you, then you will check the clock very often. It is very hard to say whether radiology is for you or not without doing it for a while, even beyond your training period. I have seen people who liked their residency and fellowship but hate the practice of radiology in private practice.

The only thing that I can say is that radiology is not what most people even other physicians think. It is much harder is many aspects. It is not sitting on your chair and looking at some images.

So how does one know as a medical student whether they will enjoy radiology?

Time flies by since you are busy or under pressure to make a report on call. There are times I wish I was in the IR lab though instead of the reading room... not because of boredom... more because diagnostic imaging interpretation can be stressful and mentally taxing.

Time did drag when I was a medical student on radiology rotation though. That is normal because you are just sitting there clueless.

If you're busy, it blasts by. You'll be busy as long as you don't do Nucs at the VA. 🙂

Some of our rotations have too much down time. I'm not happy about it for a number of reasons, one of which is that I feel like I'm wasting a month of my education. Fortunately, the PD is hearing our call for change, and these rotations are being changed/eliminated.

The first thing that comes to my mind is how come the PD or educational committee who are open to change, have not changed it so far. Low volume in some rotations is not something new. In fact, since the volume is increasing everywhere, it should be the other way.

Residency is only 4 years. It is not like a private practice that you can build it from scratch. If you are an applicant, go to a program that has been well rounded for a long time.

If you watch people playing a game that you don't know the rules to, how slow does time move to you? If you are actively playing someone an intense game of chess, how fast does time go by? That's how radiology feels to a med student versus an attending radiologist.

For it to change, it has to change at some point, right? This is a nonsense statement.

Are you just trailing me to comment negatively on everything I say? I've made maybe 10 posts in the last few months and I'm pretty sure you've replied to all of them.

Yes, but I don't want to be in the middle of the changes. If I have options, I go to a program that is solid and organized enough and doesn't need a lot of changes.

Short answer: Fast. If you are engaged in work, time flies. In it purely to make dough, its a drag. Enjoy work, its 1/3 your life.
