How good of a school is Wayne State (Michigan)?

Just out of curiousity, I wanted to know how good of a medical school Wayne State, in Michigan, is? What are its strengths, how does it match, etc?

I'm not sure about it's match list, but it's got one hell of a clinical program. I was not too impressed with the basic sciences there, but it doesn't seem like the clinical years can be beat. They have a MASSIVE hospital system (one of the largest in the US) and according to students there, this really enhances your 3rd/4th years. As far as reputation goes, they are mainly known within the midwest, and obviously most well known in Michigan. They don't have a very strong national reputation, but I wouldn't worry much about that. If I weren't waitlisted there right now and if it wasn't in Detroit (not my favorite city for many reasons), I'd be seriously considering going there.

I will be headed to Wayne State medical next year for sure. I didn't know a great deal about their program until I interviewed there. That was my first real look at the place...since, I've done alot of additional research and headed down there on a couple of other occasions.
I would agree with rxfudd in his assessment of the clinical programs. Everyone I've spoken with who has a connection to WSU (even some UMich med grads who've worked with Wayne residents) said that the clinical experiences at Wayne are pretty much unbeatable. Everything I've seen and heard about Wayne has indicated to me that they train very highly clinically skilled physicians.

Wayne does show their matchlist and many students match into highly competetive specialties.

Alot of people see the school's location as a drawback, but I am very excited to be moving into downtown Detroit.
Anyways, I hope this helps some...even though all this would probably mean more from someone who has actually gone to school at Wayne. Oh well, I will be there soon.

i have a close friend who is an ENT at Hopkins, and he graduated from WS, and did his residency at Pritzker... he passed up UMich to go to WS just cuz he wanted a change in scenary (he went to undergrad at UMich)... having said that, i should mention that this was like 30-40 years ago... so things might be a little different now...
still he is extremely successful and a very well respected surgeon and academic physician... from talking to him, he really enjoyed WS and doesn't regret a thing...

just thought i'd share that! :wink:
