For all you dental students out there, I was wondering how hard is dental school. I hear so much about Med school being a huge workload compared to undergrad and similar to law school, but I am not sure how hard it really is going to be. Do you people have to study every day or what?

For reference I'm have a B.S. in Biology with a 3.3 gpa.

there is a huge difference betwen undergrad and dental school. as it should be. there are certainly weeks that suck and a sharp stick in the eye would be more fun, but overall, you get through it.

In that case, you can expect to make somewhere between a 3.1 and 3.25. Just kidding. 😉

There are people who sucked in undergrad and are at the top of there dental class and there are people who tore up undergrad and are at the bottom half of their dental class. Its just a different beast and from what Ive gathered, its basically a crapshoot regarding who does well and who doesnt.

Studying is only half the job. Don't forget your preclinic lab work.

It's hellish.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO true.

It's definitely hard, but it's up to you. Do you want to be in the top of your class or just get by. There is a huge difference in workload between those loads.

It's definitely hard at times, but I enjoy it.

I guess I remember dental school as the time when i drank the most and studied the most.

Kinda wierd but true.

Allthough I wanted to do well. If you just want to get by I guess then you could just drink the most and study the least?

Grad. in 3 wks 😀 Its been a long road----some nasty times, some fun times but mostly challenging. It is a game-----and if you're willing to play you'll survive with a few bruises perhaps a cut or two. If you fight the system; like to rock the boat, or just plan don't get it-------it could be a long 4 yrs. For those in their 3rd, 4th or graduated you'll probably understand this better 😳 . All-in-all---- boy am I glad to be finished 😍

It certainly is a game. I haven't found dental school to be bad at all. There's lots of material during the didactic years, but I'm in clinic now so it's a frickin' awesome party (seriously).

The material in dental school is plentiful, but none of it is hard. From that aspect undergrad was much more difficult (concepts that were new to me or I found to be difficult, such as some of physics). Dental school is just a memorization game, among other things.

Is it hard? No. Is it time consuming? Hell yes! If you want straight A's, its just a maraton of endurance. Thats it. Everyone that can get into school can have the potential to be at the top. Its just who has the drive to study ALL the time. Period. Its quite a simple formula.

I really believe that Dental school is harder than med school. my roomate is in med school and she chills. I'm in dental school and i'm buried under a pile of didactic memorization work, patient management, clinic beaurocracy and lab work. I mean, they stretch you so thin, the definition of "hard" is redefined for you. But, I think you truly become a professional and build a work ethic. It's no walk in the park, do it only if you feel that's where your passion is.

Ask the OMS guys who are in their MSII years right now...they'll tell you it's a cakewalk when compared to DSII for the stresses of labwork, practicals, and exams every week. Here our med students take phase exams a few times a semester, which means no lectures or classes for two weeks while they get tons of time to study. Must be nice -- we have had about 55 exams this year, with only a few weeks exam-free -- most weeks we have two or more tests. Granted, much of what we're learning in dental school isn't to the same depth and scope of the med courses (e.g. Path, Micro, etc.), but if we had unlimited time like that it wouldn't be hard to learn the extra material.

This is totally not what I thought this thread would be about...

so dentalschool is harder than med school? that's what it seems like from this thread

I say medical school is harder, but dental school is a hell of a lot more work and takes way more time. But I haven't gone through both, just being a D1 while my roommate is a M1 is interesting.

😎

do we really need another one of these?

Seriously, medical and dental students must be some of the most "under-endowed" males on the planet to worry about this stuff as much as they do. I'm sure over at studentlawyer.net there aren't twenty gazillion threads devoted to proving how manly and intelligent they are. 🙄
