How important are personal statements?

I was just curious how important is the PS when applying to various residency programs. I remember writing my PS for medical school and every second of composing that biatch seemed like an eternity. I am not a very prolific writer when it comes to freelancing something like the PS and would love to put, "I really want to be an anesthiosologist. I am very easy going and get along well with everyone. PS> I am a quick learner, please pick me. Out." Any insight one may have on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
