Like joining ASA if you're applying to anesthesiology, or ACS for surgery, or ACEP for EM, etc...cause there is a section in ERAS for membership in professional societies and right now, it's blank for me

Members don't see this ad.

I don't think it's a big deal--at most a minor factor showing interest, but it's not like it takes more than a credit card to join. I'm putting down those I'm a member of, but wouldn't pony up the dough if I weren't already a member (although some are free as a med student, and if so then why not join?).

In itself, meaningless, as has been said. Joining a society might give you access to conferences, meetings and educational opportunities that you would not otherwise have had, with the result that you could meet people, make connections and network in a way which might help you. So if you are naturally inclined to smooze, and the society you join will give you appropriate opportunities to smooze that you will be able usefully to take up without detriment to everything else you need to concentrate on right now, it might, just possibly, be worth it. For most people it would be a pretty long shot.
