i know it sounds silly to ask...but whatever.

i deactivated my facebook account when i was studying for the mcat, it was just a huge distraction and i wasted too much time on it. Since being off (6 months now) i have gotten so much more done. I dont get in people's business and i liked just living my own private life without subconsciously comparing myself to everyone else's social life.
I'm starting my first semester of medical school in 2 months, and i know that there is a facebook group where everyone is getting to know each other. I am thinking that if i dont get back on facebook and start interacting with my peers that i'll be kinda left out and disconnected....
i miss the old days where you just met people in person...im getting tired of communicating through facebook...sitting in front of my computer chatting away like a bum...but i know that in this day and age, its just how things are done.

do any of you guys get along with ur class just fine and dont use facebook?

I was at one of the test colleges when it first came out. It was awesome. I am an early adopter of new technology. Im all about it.

I hate facebook. I haven't used it in years. As awesome as it is to share pictures, getting 36 million bull**** updates from people I don't care about wasn't very useful. It only exists so people who didn't like you in high school can see how much of a failure you are (or aren't). I may be a small minority here, but facebook blows, you don't need it.

QFT, but it is the preferred medium for parties, events etc notifications. Wish I could get rid of the damn thing, but it is too valuable 🙁

+1

I agree with the above. Its only good for the following:

1. looking at girls pictures after spring break and halloween
2. it facilitates pre-marital sex
3. passing the time while on the toilet (using your phone)

I never use it but keep it on my phone for events and/or invitations that may be important.

That's pretty much my take on it too. I'll post a status if I can think of something particularly witty, and it's a nice help to remember a bunch of birthdays, but otherwise it's just there as a go-to way for people to get in contact with me or for me to organize a large number of people for a party.

Just don't waste time playing the lame games, and de-activate it if you must leading up to exams, but it's essentially like cell phones were: early on you could live without it, but once EVERYONE has one and is depending on it, you get left out if you don't have it.

I was pretty much in your exact same situation. I hated facebook from the beginning, yet still wasted so much time on it. I deactivated it while studying for the mcat and didn't miss it for one second. It is amazing how much more productive you are when you're not tempted to procrastinate on that site.

With that being said... I reactivated it so I could do the facebook thing with my new class. Once school gets going in the fall, I may deactivate it again.

I think this is the general sentiment alot of people have, especially people who have been on facebook over the years and around when it initially came out. Too valuable for things like events/notifications to deactivate, but I don't like or enjoy being on facebook all that much (if at all)...it's just a part of my daily routine.

I had a bunch of classmates deactivate their facebook accounts before step 1 for the same reason, they said it wasted too much time.

I don't understand, though, while people have to deactivate their accounts. How about just not logging on very often? I check it about 2x/week, to see if I have any messages, then get off. I rarely update my status, and I don't really care what others are doing all of the time.

I've been on facebook since 2004 and I still haven't grown tired of it. Still find it entertaining for status updates (and resulting discussions), pictures, sharing of funny and/or informative links and youtube videos.

It's also a great way to keep in touch with people, don't have the time to email/call/text all of my old friends and extended fam all the time but I can see how they're doing quickly through facebook.

My classmates are pretty good e-mailing our class list for stuff so I haven't found it that necessary for school

I deactivated during my step 1 dedicated time. Unsurprisingly, I didn't miss it much.

I'd keep it, although your probably a weirdo for asking if you should activate it because you think lifes better without it. Sorry, everyones on facebook buddy the fact that your not not because of a job, or something serious like step 1 studying and it being a distraction..well thats pretty lame. Are you one of those nonconformists?

Nah not really...but then again I always figured anyone who has
Over a thousand posts on an internet forum has some issues and needs to get out more..maybe we see things differently perhaps.
I'm not a nonconformist, I'm actually fairly mainstream.
Its weird, I know it's a huge waste of time yet I would use it alottt..i went from having 800 friends to 500 thinking I could cut out people that I never talk to, but I still used it. Maybe I have self control issues

I'm starting med school in 2 months as well, so we're in the same boat. For my med school, a Facebook group has been created. Actually, for all of the schools I was accepted to a Facebook group was created. You might want to search Facebook and see if your school has started their own page.

On my schools Facebook page current students (MS1-MS4) answer the questions we (MS0) post on the group page and the we, the incoming students (MS0), try to help each other find places to live and to find room mates. It doesn't hurt to create a Facebook and just add your med school group. It is quite helpful to use Facebook as a medium for communicating with people you're trying to connect with. I've found that trying to communicate with someone through Facebook functions like an icebreaker and makes it easier for you say if you're trying to get advice from a 3rd or 4th year.

I guess just don't add a bunch of people from your undergrad as friends. This is a serious distraction.

Facebook feeds the two terrible human compulsions of voyeurism and narcissism and should be avoided at all costs.

Yep you got me there, good job 👍 ... i ignore all those fbook drunkfest event invites post exam and sit home, grab a nice bottle of lube, crack open my laptop and sit on sdn waiting to post away among other things ...

But seriously, there is no reason to not have a facebook its weird, everyone in your class will have it and be friending each other during orientation. You may not like the digital world, but it is what it is if you dont want to use it why come here and ask for advice, I am telling you you'd be missing out at least during orientation. Your school may use a listserv for postexam parties, depends on the school but not all parties are forwarded via listserv where i go.

yeah I definitely see what your saying...i was thinking of getting back on and just deactivating later when it really gets time to study...by then I should have other forms of hitting ppl up (text, email,)
I have anothee facebook account I sometimes, but it's just for my DJ name so its kinda weird using it lll

I used it in the beginning to find out about events and recognize some classmates.

I deleted it after 1st semester when I got into the swing of things socially.
