This is my story. I struggled a lot in organic chemistry 1 & 2. I made a B in orgo 1 and a C in orgo 2. I really dislike organic and its not my favorite subject in the world. On the other hand, I LOVE GENERAL CHEMISTRY AND ANATOMY. Actually chemistry was my favorite subject in high school and I still enjoy it...just not organic.

My question is how much of organic chemistry knowledge do pharmacy students use in pharmacy school, besides medicinal chemistry what other classes requires organic knowledge (knowing functional groups, rxns, synthesis, etc)

I really love pharmacy and I have a lot of experience working in the pharmacy and this is the only thing I see myself doing. I just don't want organic chemistry to be a hurdle in my dreams of making it into pharmacy school.

You need it for classes like pharmacology and med chem. You won't be using every single thing you learned in organic, but the concepts are important.

The only reaction you really need to have a grasp on is hydrolysis.

Other than that, just be able to understand chemical structures from a stereochemical viewpoint. Not much about reactions...or synthesis...really easy stuff.

I would say understanding how electrons move in chemical reactions can be really helpful. I know when we went over like the Krebs cycle and stuff in biochem, it was made a lot of sense because I could see how things would react with one another

Review resonance: how the electrons move in resonance structure. Review basic acid and base, and how to recognize the structures as acid or base. Review pH. Beside that I do not think you need to review anything else.

I only have two years of classes and I've almost finished one and so far we haven't used organic at all. Maybe that will change next year but so far there isn't a lot of chemistry besides stuff you learned in general like Henderson-Hasselbalch which keeps popping up over and over again.
