Hello all,

M1 here, trying to decide whether doing research is the right way to go for me. I personally hate research and would avoid it if I could, but I wanted to get an idea of how important a research project and publication actually is for matching to residencies. Specifically, EM, IM, FM, RAD?

Are there many applicants who do well without research? Is that a majority?

Thanks!

In short, it depends. From what I understand, you won't absolutely need research to match into any of the specialties you listed unless you want to go to a big academic program. However, if you hate research, you probably don't want to go to a big academic program.

The ONLY necessity in your academic career right now is to STUDY, STUDY, STUDY for Step 1. How would you like to do research for a specific field for 2 years, take a test, and realize you can't even get into that field now?????? It's NOT a good feeling. Study for STEP 1, THEN think about (not) doing research.

I won't be able to have a sound sleep again until you reveal that you are Libraryismyhome.

OP: unfortunately the residencies that care about research are also the residencies in desirable locations as well. County hospital of Kansas won't care about publications but most hospitals in LA/NYC/Boston will.

He is someone who would've sounded like you if he got a 222 on his step 1.

You can do well without research, especially in the fields you listed, if you have good clinical grades, letters, and step scores. It may make you slightly less competitive for research powerhouse programs, but you shouldn't want to go to those anyways if you hate research so much. You will still be able to find a place that will give you excellent clinical training and plenty of opportunities for a fellowship if that is what you desire.
