Stats - 3.92 GPA, 3.90 sGPA, 514 MCAT, 400 Medical neuroscience research hours, 30 hours shadowing ER and anesthesiologist. 100 hours community volunteering, 100 hours of intimate partner violence shelter volunteering (my research is based on IPV), 80 hours of on-call crisis intervention working with police responding to incidents, RA for a senior dorm, 50 hours volunteering and on E-board for non-profit. Born with a genetic defect that had me in special ed till the 8th grade. Graduating from Big Ten School. Also, will be applying to Pitt aware of my low chances, but it is my dream school. Also, I am a Michigan resident.

How did you create your list? You have some schools on there that are NOT OOS friendly. Did you use the MSAR?

Remove UMass, UF, Iowa, Maryland, UNC, Utah, Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Toronto? (You’re not a canadian citizen) and prob a bunch of others I missed. This is a really bad school list

All right for sure, I have spent a lot of time on it as of now and half my family live in Toronto so that's why it is on my list.

How would you make the school list better or what advice would you have? I'm aware that I am not the most competitive applicant, so I am just trying to find a doable school list.

You should primarily consider your state schools and private OOS schools that fit your stats and you fit their mission. Many state schools favor the home team.

Yes, but without you being a citizen you are wasting your time and money bothering.

Your stats are actually very good, above average.

Apply to ALL your state schools and a decent amount of OOS privates. Avoid state schools that arent OOS friendly. Buy the MSAR and see what the stats say on that.

This cycle I interviewed at and was accepted to UMASS and U Maryland with no ties to either state. My stats are very similar to OP’s.

UMass has changed in the past few years, then. When i applied they took ZERO oos. Soo..

Regardless, it isnt the best approach for OP to overload their list with schools like that. Casting a wide net is really the best approach.

I'd also recommend asking @Faha and @Goro for their advice on this!

(Though as someone from the state, I'd say def strike out University of Utah. The OOS odds are pretty low; they take only 10 non-Idaho OOS who didn't do undergraduate in Utah, if I recall correctly).

What I did was apply to: All my state/regional schools, private out of state schools that interview a good amount of OOS applicants (grater than like 9%) where my stats fall near/in range, 5-6 schools interviewing high % of OOS applicants where my stats are above their range, and 5 or 6 dream/ultra-reach schools. Total should be around 22-28ish i'd say.

I have more shadowing lined up and got CNA certified this summer and plan on doing that this summer I know it wont be on my primary in terms of hours, but hoping it helps. I have had a hard time getting those hours up.

I got CNA certified this past summer so I plan on doing that this upcoming summer and through the spring I will hopefully be able to bring up my shadowing times.
