Just out of curiosity, I just wanted to know if all DS are as tough as mine. Our grading scales are extremely high, 77 C, 85 B, 93, A...

It depends on the classes, but most non-science courses are very tough graded...

The science classes are much lenient, 75 B, 85A... etc... some of those, except Biochemistry.

It's kind of frustrating to be in the 80 range, and still get C's...

I don't care about specializing, however my class is very competitive, and everyone around you wants A's... and it's kind of frustrating because it makes me feel as if I'll be a mediocre dentist.

I am trying extremely hard, during finals we have 7 exams in 2 weeks.

At NYU its roughly the same grading scale as well.
C would be 69.50-75.49
B would be 82.50-86.49
A would be 92.50-96.49

And then we have -/+ for each letter grade as well even though A+ and A would both be 4.0.

P/F/H 😎
Passing - above 70% or 75%, sometimes it's 65% to pass
Honors - usually top 10% or top 20% of the class
During finals we've usually had 6-8 finals in 1 week, and I think somewhere in our D2 year there's the dreaded "15 exams during finals week" quarter.

Your school sounds like Tufts

Sounds dreadful.

True P/F checkin in 😎

No Marginal Passes?
For most classes, no. For direct (this is the only class I know of so far), if you fail the lab final, you get an "IP" = in progress, do a makeup next quarter, and get a P.
Otherwise it's P/F, with remediation over the summer to get a "NP/P" on your transcript should you not pass a class.

what does it mean with marginal passing? They fail you and make you repeat the year.
Marginal Pass is like a D-, it means you barely passed, thank "us" for not holding you back a year.

Cool, they may have gotten rid of the MP/M altogether.

Well at least you guys have Options!! We either pass our competencies the 1st time, no remediation... or we do not pass. If we do not pass we fail. 🙁 Oh and no redo-day either.

If not specializing, just do enough to past. I never had a patient asked me about my grades. The student with highest GPA and the student with lowest GPA still get the same diploma. GPA doesn't matter.

Most classes at my school have a grading scale of
93<A
85<B
Etc.
Very rarely did classes have the normal 90=A, 80=B scale.
If you have over a 3.9 you’re within the top 3-5% if not higher.

Thank you!!! I feel that way, except it's hard when almost all my class is into A's..

3.9 should put you around top 10 at my school. 3.7 will put you in top quartile. Most years, #1 ranked person does not have a 4.0
This is why Rank is more important in applications than raw GPA.

Edit: GPA/Rank does not make you a better dentist. Caring about your patients, working hard, and dedication to mastering your profession are more important than a numeric grade. Some of the top ranked people I would never send my family/friends.
