k my dentist is a general practitioner but at the same time does brasis...i thought you would have to be specialist (orthodontist) to be able to give patients brasis.
am I missing something, is he doing somethin illegal?


also, another question, is part of general practioners job is to extract a wisdom tooth, or does that require a specialist?
 
A general dentist can do any aspect of dentistry that they desire to/feel comfortable to. However, the general dentist needs to perform all those tasks upto the level of competency that a specialist has. So, as a result, if your general dentist is providing orthodontic treatment and something goes wrong, your GP case results if it went to court would be held upto those of a board certified orthodontist.

It's relatively easy to obtain additional continuing education training in areas like orthodontics and oral surgery as a GP in private practice. What the tough part as a GP is is realizing which of those potential cases you can do and which ones you should refer. And that's an area where experience is often the most valuable asset.
