I was hoping to use step 2 to study for intern year and was going to try to tak e it just before starting. My question is, is this too late? Do I have to have scores in before the start date?

If you scored well on Step 1, put it off as long as you like, you don't need the score to help you get the residency you want. If your Step 1 score is low, bust it and do great on Step 2 and take it early to help you get the residency you want. Just call and ask if you have to have it or not for intern year.
