How long are LOR's held by AMCAS/AACOMAS?

I graduated from college last June (2010). I am now in a masters program.

Decided to give applications to medical school another shot given a decent MCAT score.

All three of my LORs will be from my undergrad institution, which I am not at any longer.

I don't want to wait much longer and risk the chances they lose memories about me.

That being said, I may apply this upcoming April (2011) or the following April (2012) depending on how my ECs are looking.

If I ask for LOR's from my professors, will they be held for an extended period of time, so that I can apply ~ a year after LORs are received?

That is, sign up for AMCAS and AACOMAS now, integrate my LORs (collected from professors using VECollect) in the application, then apply the following cycle?

Does that make sense? Is that possible?

I must be radioactive. Nobody will touch my posts with anything but negativity.

My favorite.

"doesn't matter if you are now treated for ADHD, you suck, don't bother with medicine"

whatever...

I'm a reapplicant so I had to go through this too. Not sure about DO schools, but AMCAS only keeps them for one year (the current application cycle). What you can do, however, is to open an account with Interfolio (like $20 / year) and have your writers send their letters to Interfolio instead of AMCAS. Then have Interfolio send your letters to AMCAS, which AMCAS allows. Interfolio keeps the letters for however long you need them so I think that's perfect for your situation.

Does VECollect work in the same way as Interfolio? I will open a interfolio account for a DO or MD LOR or a LOR from somebody not at my school.

My professors have to send through VECollect, so the advisers can "check" them.

AMCAS only keeps letters for the current app season. AACOMAS doesn't have anything to do with your letters. For DO apps you have to use Interfolio (or a similar service) or mail each school individually (which I don't think anyone does anymore).
