Blood can be stored for approximately 42 days... but platelets only last 3 days. So yes, we have an oversupply at the moment, and it will go to waste. Wait until next week or next month to donate blood.

ok my bad......someone told me it lasted 180 days...I guess that is wrong 😀 glad I found out

fresh blood 30 days (NYS)
blood products (like fresh frozen plasma) up to year.

Aha Barton, Thanks!

so I guess that applied to frozen blood, right? so it could last 180 days?

Also, how long before one can donate again? 3 months?

My information came from a blood-bank technician. Maybe they don't use frozen blood products in people? He said that a lot of blood will sadly be wasted. And yes, you can donate every three months.

blood lives for 180 days in the body is i believe the stat you are referring to, what.

oh thanks Jasmine....I guess I confused up the stats...

Is it possible to donate sooner than 3 months?

I think you can donate every 56 days or 8 weeks.

on a side note:

if you have been out of the country to any third world type place one can't donate for a year.

i even think that if one has been to certain countries in africa one can't ever donate again, but i'm not positive on that one.

also, if one has gotten a tattoo, they can't donate for a year afterwards.

The above posts are trus that platelets only last three days, but there is also a number of companies that are researching ways to freeze-dry blood. This is only a devoloping technology, but when harvested it will help a great deal with blood shortage problems.

If you visit certain african countries, you will be banned from giving blood because of the antibodies you have developed.
Also, Piercings usually keep you out for a year..And certain medications and medical conditions<chronic bronchitis for one>.
