In particular, letters of references, as a reapplicant who was at least WL? Are the letters trashed or held onto should that student reapply to their school? I know an updated letter or two is required.

It will vary by school. We have applications from at least 5 years back.

When I applied in 2005-2006 at age 30, one of my state schools still had my prior app from a decade earlier. That first app was made in the pre-Internet era; in the 1990s, you mailed in your AMCAS on a floppy disk. In these days of computerized everything, I would advise you to operate under the assumption that the adcoms have access to everything from your prior app. Kinda like the NSA. :-d
